Don't Go It Alone: Why You Need to Get Out of Your Cave

blog leadership Aug 28, 2025

Running an IT service business can be an isolating journey. You're constantly focused on the day-to-day operations and putting out fires, all while managing your team. It's easy to get stuck in your own bubble, which can stifle innovation and limit your growth. But what if there was a simple, yet powerful, solution to this challenge? The key is to get out of your cave and start talking to other like-minded people.

The Power of a Mastermind

A mastermind group is a powerful tool for any business owner. It's a gathering of peers who come together to share ideas, challenges, and successes. Think of it as your personal board of directors – a group of people who understand your world and can offer honest feedback and support.

The true value of a mastermind isn't just about finding solutions to problems. It’s about building a network of people who can help you see new opportunities, avoid costly mistakes, and stay motivated. The best part? You don't always have to pay for it.

You can start your own mastermind group with just a handful of people. A great example is when my brother Karl and I decided to get into coaching. We started a simple mastermind with just the two of us. We then brought in another coach, and another, and before we knew it, we had a core group of four or five people. This group became a trusted space to share ideas and help each other grow.

How to Find Your Tribe

Finding the right people is the most important part of building a successful mastermind. You're not just looking for people in the same business; you're looking for like-minded individuals who truly connect with you. The goal is to find people you respect, and who you believe have a long-term future in the industry.

Here's how you can find them:

  • Attend events: Go to industry conferences – e.g. ChannelPro, ChannelCon, ASCII, IT Nation, to name just a few. Use these opportunities to meet people and see who you click with.
  • Tap into existing networks: Look for local meetups or online forums where you can connect with other IT service professionals.
  • Start with one person: You don’t need a huge group right away. Start with just one other person who you trust and respect. The group will grow naturally from there.

Once you have your group, remember to protect it. Be selective about who you bring in, and steer clear of anyone who feels more like a “time bandit” – someone who drains your energy and offers little value in return. The goal is to create a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing openly and honestly.

Building Your Collaborative Advantage

Ultimately, the health and resilience of your business are greatly enhanced by the strength of your network. By stepping out of your cave and connecting with others, you open yourself up to a world of new ideas and possibilities. Whether it's a formal peer group with metrics or a casual mastermind you build with a few colleagues, the important thing is that you've got a group to talk with about your pain points, your successes… all of it.

The Path Forward

It's one thing to know you need to get out of the cave, but it's another to actually do it. Whether you start by reaching out to a single colleague or joining a larger group, the important thing is that you're taking action. For many IT business owners, this is the first step toward building a more connected and resilient business that's built to last.
