Your Roadmap to Success: Charting the Path to the Next Level

blog leadership Sep 18, 2025

Is your business moving forward with a clear purpose, or is it just… moving? It’s a question I see all the time. It’s not uncommon for an organization's plan to be outdated, poorly conceived, or even non-existent. Without a clear roadmap, teams work hard but don't gain ground, and goals always remain just out of reach.

A solid commitment to continuous, incremental improvement is the only way to the top. But that journey requires a blueprint. Before you can truly get started on reaching your potential, a roadmap and strategy must be built.

The Three Core Components of Your Journey

To get your business from where it is now to where you want it to be, you need to rely on a clear framework. Think of it as a complete navigation system for your journey.

  • The Roadmap to Success: This is the big-picture, long-term plan. It defines who or what you are working to become tomorrow. It’s the entire map of your journey.
  • Success Paths: A quality roadmap is made up of one or more legs of the journey, which I call Success Paths. These are the parallel paths we take to ensure success in specific areas of focus. They move everything incrementally and continuously closer to your long-term goals. Much like a college course is broken into individual classes, your roadmap is broken into Success Paths.
  • The Strategy: This provides the fine details required to understand the Roadmap and how to proceed down each Success Path. You can think of the Strategy as the written, turn-by-turn directions that accompany your map.
Putting It All Together: A Real-World Example

Let's make this practical. Imagine a business owner whose goal is to increase company efficiency and get back to being profitable.

The first step is to build a Roadmap to Success. This roadmap would likely include a Service Delivery Success Path and a Finance Success Path. A Career Advancement Success Path might even be added to help an owner move from the Lead Engineer position into the CEO seat.

Each of these paths is a distinct project. One may be completed in a few weeks while another remains in progress for longer. This approach allows the massive journey to be broken down into logical and navigable trips.

The Mindset for Execution

The journey to the top is about one thing: a solid commitment to continuous, incremental improvement. It’s not about a simple list of things to do; it’s about learning the core skills required to win and accomplish everything you set your mind to. This is how an individual, a team, or an entire company can realize its full potential and get to the next level. A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step—and now is the time to take it.
